Global Recycling Day - Think Opportunities, Not Waste

We humans have consumed more of the earth's natural resources in the last 50 years than ever before. 40% of the world's raw materials are supplied by recycled materials; "rubbish" that lay right in front of our eyes all the time, thrown in our bins. If we instead recycle our waste, we help preserve the earth's natural resources.

Recycling plays an important role

Global Recycling Day is a day for the world to gather and put the planet first; a day held each year to highlight the importance recycling plays in conserving our most precious resources. The mission for the day has been determined by Global Recycling Foundation and is twofold. On the one hand, they want to draw the attention of world leaders to the fact that recycling is too important not to be a global issue; that a common and unified approach is urgent. On the one hand, we also want to ask us humans, all over the world, to think of recycling as the "seventh resource".

Recycling - the "seventh resource"

Of the earth's natural resources, we humans tend to think of water, air, oil, natural gas, coal and minerals as the most important. These resources form the very basis of our existence. All our food, all our nourishment and all our belongings ultimately come from these six elements. We simply can not survive without them. But the resources are limited and we do not have much at all. Therefore, the Global Recycling Foundation designates recyclable materials as "the seventh resource", because recyclable materials provide 40% of the world's raw material needs. To say the least, it is important that we learn to recycle properly.

Buy what you need, use what you bought

Instead of wear and tear, we need to think about ours circular economy, to consume within the limits of the planet and take advantage of what we already have. Today, we use enormous amounts of nature's resources to produce new things that are then thrown away. Instead, we need to consume in resource-efficient products that last longer, think used over newly produced and repair instead of throwing away. By recycling materials and sorting our materials, we can all contribute to reduced new production, while saving precious energy.

Nobody can do everything but everyone can do something. Shop second hand or arrange a change of clothes day with friends - it's a fun way to renew your wardrobe. If you want to buy newly produced clothes, look for garments made from recycled materials and of good quality. Wash clothes gently without harmful chemicals and keep your garments for a long time before donating, selling or recycling your clothes. Use the crockery and glasses instead of buying disposable items when there is a party and buy a refillable water bottle and thermos instead of disposable mugs and plastic bottles. Skosh bottles made from recycled plastic, you can easily reuse when it's time to clean your home.

Think about how you can prevent waste already when you shop. Get in the habit of unpacking an extra cloth bag. Not only do you reduce the purchase of plastic bags in the grocery store, but you can also buy fruit and vegetables in bulk instead of jump caps packaged in heavy plastic packaging. Plan your menu for the week and use the ingredients in the fridge before they get bad. Reduce food waste and use compost if you have the opportunity.

Good luck with your recycling!

Global Recycling Day is a day of action, for the world to come together and put our planet first. We at Skosh think it's an important day to pay attention - the Global Recycling Foundation has collected some nice - and some not so nice - facts about recycling!

  • By recycling, we save over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions every year
  • Approximately 1,6 million people are employed in the processing of recyclable materials
  • Austria recycles 63% of its used products every year
  • Man has been melting and remelting metal since 700 BC
  • In 2017, we used one year's value of the earth's natural resources in just 7 months
  • 91% of the plastic produced is not recycled
  • Aluminum cans can be recycled and put back on store shelves in just 2 months
